TLDR; SEO earns you a place in the ranked list of links. AEO (answer engine optimisation) earns you a place inside the answer, the featured snippet, the People Also Ask box, Google’s AI Overview. They are not rivals. AEO is a layer on top of SEO: same foundation of useful, authoritative content, plus the structure that lets an engine lift a clean answer straight off your page.
For a material and changing share of informational searches in 2026, the first result can be an AI-generated answer rather than a list of ten blue links. Prevalence varies by market, device, query type, and measurement date. One large Ahrefs study found that almost every query that triggered an AI Overview was informational, but that does not mean most informational queries triggered one. That distinction matters when planning and reporting the work.
I run this work for clients across education, recruitment and training. AEO is not a new discipline that replaces SEO. It is what SEO looks like once the answer, not the link, became the thing worth winning.
What answer engine optimisation is
Answer engine optimisation (also spelled optimization) is the practice of shaping content so an answer engine can extract a clean, correct response to a specific question and show it, or cite you as the source.
The answer surfaces that matter are:
- Featured snippets, the boxed answer at the top of a classic results page.
- People Also Ask, the expanding list of related questions.
- AI Overviews, Google’s synthesised answer that now appears above results for a material share of queries (about one in five SERPs in Ahrefs’ November 2025 study).
The common thread is that search systems can use a page both as a ranked destination and as a source for a composed answer. Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to its AI features, with no special submission or markup required. The additional practical work is making the page’s useful claims clear enough to understand and support.
AEO vs SEO: what is the same, what is different
The foundation is shared. Both need a technically healthy site, content that is relevant, and enough authority that the engine trusts you on the topic. There is no AEO shortcut around a page that no engine considers credible.
What differs is structure and intent:
- SEO optimises a page to rank for a topic. The unit is the page.
- AEO optimises a passage to answer a question. The unit is the question-and-answer pair.
In practice that means a heading phrased as the question a person asks, followed immediately by a direct, self-contained answer, before you go on to nuance and detail. The answer has to make sense lifted out of the page, because that is exactly what the engine does with it.
Where GEO fits in
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the same idea aimed at AI assistants, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, rather than a search results page. When someone asks an assistant a question and it synthesises an answer, GEO is the work of being one of the sources it draws on and cites.
The mechanics overlap heavily with AEO: clear structure, specific answers, evidence, and a distinct point of view the model can quote. The difference is measurement. You can see AI Overview presence in search tooling; assistant citations are harder to track, and on a young site they trail classic search by a long way. That gap only closes once the answer-shaped structure exists, so I build that first and treat citation as a later measurement.
What changes in the work
Not as much as the “SEO is dead” headlines suggest. The changes are concrete:
- Write to the question, not just the topic. Pull the real questions from People Also Ask and search data, and answer them directly under matching headings.
- Lead with the answer. A concise, extractable response first; supporting detail after. Burying the answer in paragraph six loses the snippet.
- Back it with evidence. Answer engines favour content with specifics, data, and a clear author behind it over generic summary.
- Keep earning conventional visibility. Google’s AI features are built on its search systems, so crawlability, internal linking, page experience, visible text, and accurate structured data remain the documented foundation. Avoid treating a particular classic ranking position as a guaranteed eligibility threshold; Google does not publish one.
Do you have to choose?
No, and treating it as a choice is the mistake. AI Overviews sit above the classic results, but the classic results are still there and still get clicks. Some queries show no AI answer at all. The right posture is layered: solid SEO underneath, AEO structure on top so you are eligible for the answer box, and GEO awareness so the same content can be cited by assistants.
If you abandon SEO to chase AEO, you lose the foundation the answer visibility depends on. If you ignore AEO, you cede the most valuable position on the page to whoever structured their content better.
If you want to see where your content already triggers AI Overviews and People Also Ask, and where it is being passed over, that is the kind of audit I run inside Organic Growth and AI Search engagements, along with deciding what to publish next, and in what order. Common questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO earns visibility in the classic ranked list of links. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) earns visibility inside the answer itself: featured snippets, People Also Ask, and Google’s AI Overview. They share the same foundation of useful, well-structured content, but AEO rewards content shaped as a direct, extractable answer to a specific question.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but it is not a replacement either. AEO is a layer on top of SEO. You still need the technical health, relevance and authority that SEO is built on; AEO adds the structure that lets an engine lift a clean answer out of your page and show or cite it.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a composed answer rather than a list of links. Google’s AI Overview is one, and so are assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. They read across sources and synthesise a response, sometimes citing the pages they drew from.
Is SEO dead in 2026?
No, but it has changed. AI Overviews appear for a material and changing share of informational queries, depending on market, device, topic and study period. The response is not to abandon search: it is to make useful content easy for search systems to understand and cite while continuing to earn classic visibility.
